WC Athletics Needs Your Support

Dear West Catholic Community,

In mid-March, during the season of Lent, we all were abruptly asked to sacrifice much more than our usual Lenten intentions in an effort to protect the health and safety of our community.

Overnight, we closed the building. We stopped all athletic practices and competitions. We halted the Fish Fry after a valiant attempt by a dedicated team to salvage what we could. Winter sports could not finish. Our girls basketball team was not able to play for a regional championship on March 12; this would have marked their first regional final appearance in 25 years. All the hours poured into a wildly successful season came to a screeching halt.

Spring sports followed. Each and every senior spring athlete who looked forward to playing one last time on their home field had the opportunity taken from them as they were told spring sports had been canceled. For many of these athletes, they may never have the chance to compete competitively in these sports again.

Now, after closely monitoring the information and guidance coming from the national, state and local public health experts and politicians regarding COVID-19, we feel we must cancel our beloved West Catholic Golf Outing set for June 5. For 37 years, the golf outing has always been a favorite way to demonstrate the love and support our community has for West Catholic Athletics.

There is also a chance that we may be forced to cancel our summer athletic camps. As these camps are scheduled to start in June, time is running short for a decision, but we hope to make an announcement by May 15.

A significant amount of our athletics budget is based on the money we raise during our Fish Frys, annual golf outing and summer camps. Without the profitability of these fundraisers, athletics at West Catholic would not be what they are today. We are proud to offer 17 different varsity programs for our students and without your support, our athletes would not gain the many life lessons sports provide.

Although we cannot bring back what was lost, please consider supporting our athletes in the upcoming 2020-2021 season. Your donation will help cover strength and conditioning services, field maintenance, upgrades to the outdoor scoreboard,  uniforms, athletic equipment and other needs that are currently unfunded due to the disruption. Your gift will help next year’s teams flourish despite COVID-19 and the sacrifices we’ve had to make. Please know every donation helps and is greatly appreciated by our staff and student-athletes.

We continue to pray for the health and safety of you and your families. We hope to soon join together as a community to cheer on our favorite West Catholic teams!

God Bless and Go Falcons!
