Blessed Irene Stefani

Died: October 31, 1930, in Gikondi, Mukurweini, Nyeri, Kenya
Blessed Irene Stefani joined the Consolata Missionary Sisters in 1911. Three years later, she was sent on a mission to Nyeri, Kenya by Blessed Giuseppe Allamano. While there, Stefani served as a nurse, earning the nickname Nyaatha, which translates to "mother of mercy."
During World War I, Stefani tended to wounded soldiers in various African military hospitals. After the war, she returned to Nyeri before being appointed to Our Lady of Divine Providence mission in Gikondi. There, she taught in schools and instructed parishioners in catechism. She served as the Superior of the Consolata Missionary sisters until her death in 1930.
Stefani was declared a Servant of God by Pope John Paul II on July 22, 1985. In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI declared her to be Venerable and on May 23, 2015, she was beatified by Cardinal Polycarp Pengo in Nyeri, Kenya.
Stefani is the patron saint of Nyeri and Consolata Missionaries.
