As Gov. Whitmer has unveiled her MI Safe Schools: Michigan’s 2020-21 Return to School Roadmap, we are now able to finalize our plans for re-opening West Catholic on August 19. We are required to submit plans to the State Superintendent prior to the start of school for both Phase 4 and Phase 5 of the reopen Michigan plan. We will make the full plan available to you when all details are finalized. We will follow the necessary requirements and work with the Kent County Health Department to form sensible policy, making sure our students, staff and community are safe. And we will continue to provide our students with a cutting-edge, dynamic, excellence-driven education.

Our current plans center around the knowledge that there is no substitute for in-class instruction and human interaction. Yet during this pandemic, we recognize the need to provide flexibility and choice so we can provide an excellent education while protecting the health of each and every student and staff member. We can get through this together! Go to to learn more about our plans for the 2020-2021 school year.

West Catholic will be following recommendations from the Kent County Health Department in regard to students, staff or community members who have tested positive or have been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. Please note that these can and may change over time - if so, we will communicate the changes.

Doctors and other health care providers may be giving different advice. The KCHD is working on addressing this. However, we will follow this guidance. For now, here are our requirements based on the KCHD:

  1. If a student, staff member or community member has been diagnosed as positive for COVID-19, they may return to West Catholic and WC activities after 10 days of the onset of symptoms, given that they have been fever-free for 72 hours and their symptoms are improving.
  2. If the diagnosis is asymptomatic, it is 10 days since the test was administered, assuming 72 hours without a fever.
  3. If a family member tests positive, other family members must quarantine for 14 days since the last close contact. Close contact is defined as any period 15 minutes or longer when you are closer than 6 feet with or without a mask. Close contact also includes sharing anything that would put you in direct contact with the infected person's saliva or respiratory droplets - being directly sneezed on or sharing an ice cream cone, for example. Please note that this timeline resets if any additional household members are diagnosed positive.

We are anticipating all of those in the above cases will be in quarantine during the time period prior to their return to campus for the safety of those around them.

We would also like to communicate the following -- For any individual that has spent more than 15 minutes with someone diagnosed positive, closer than 6 feet with or without a mask, we encourage you to quarantine for 14 days since the encounter. You may return to school functions after the 14 days if you remain symptom-free. Household members of a close contact do not need to quarantine.

If you are planning on being in the West Catholic school building this summer, you will be required to follow the procedures listed below:

1) Stay home if you have a fever (over 100.3 degrees), cough, sore throat, shortness of breath or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days.

2) When coming to West Catholic, go to this link. Fill out your name and answer the questions in the Google form. There will be QR codes in the main office that you can scan with your phone or an iPad that will bring you directly to the form. If you answer "Yes" to any of the questions, please return home.

3) If you answer "No" to all the questions, you will be allowed to enter the Main Office. Do not use any other entrance. Go directly to the front desk where a temperature check will be administered. If your temperature is below 100.4 degrees, you will be allowed to enter the building.

4) A confidential record of screenings will be maintained to the extent possible by the law.

Please note that these procedures may be adjusted to keep our WC community members safe and are subject to change at any time. We are also in the process of developing a procedure for the fall and will communicate this plan as the 2020-2021 school year approaches.

The 2020 West Catholic yearbook has been inducted into the Walsworth Publishing Gallery of Excellence. Only a small percentage of yearbooks are inducted into this gallery each year. Books are chosen based on quality demonstration of theme, coverage, design, photography and copy.

"I am so proud of the yearbook staff. Despite having to complete the yearbook while quarantined at home, the staff worked hard and created a phenomenal book," Ms. Critchett, yearbook adviser, said.
