Throughout his life, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati displayed a passion for helping others. In 1918, he joined the Saint Vincent de Paul group where he spent most of his time helping the poor and vulnerable. Four years later, he joined the Third Order of Saint Dominic where he studied the teachings of Thomas Aquinas, Catherine of Siena and Paul the Apostle.
Frassati passed away on July 4, 1925, in Turin, due to poliomyelitis. On the day of his funeral, the streets were lined with thousands of mourners honoring Frassati for his charitable works throughout the community.
On October 23, 1987, he was proclaimed to be Venerable after Pope John Paul II authorized a decree confirming that Frassati had lived a model Christian life of heroic virtue.
Frassati is the patron saint of students, young Catholics, mountaineers, youth groups, Dominican tertiaries and World Youth Day.
