Physical Education

Program Goal: Through a faith-based wellness program, students will develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors required for healthy, active living.

All students must earn 1 credit in Physical Education while completing a semester of Health Education and a semester of PE Activities I prior to graduation. See specific course information below.

*Students may waive one semester of the required Physical Education requirement by successfully completing two athletic programs during the same school year, participating in Band for two years or by successfully completing 90 hours of athletic instruction/practice/competition of a pre-approved non-school program related to physical education/athletics/recreation under the supervision of a teacher/coach/personal trainer in an 18-week period of time. The Guidance Department will counsel registrants regarding this policy.

Health Education

Course Number:  PE615

Prerequisite:  None
Course Description:  The study of health or our general physical, mental and social well-being is about making wise choices throughout life. In order to make healthy decisions, students will learn about nutrition, disease prevention, mental health, first aid and substance abuse. This semester-long course offers students rich opportunities for analyzing their behaviors and learning ways to create a happier and healthier lifestyle.

Lifetime Fitness & Wellness

Course Number:  PE616
Open to grades: ​ 9, 10, 11, 12
Credit Hours: 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite:  None
Course Description:  This course is an introduction to fitness and health principles with an emphasis on physical activity, nutrition, weight management and health-related fitness concepts. Students will have the opportunity to assess their current levels of physical fitness, nutrition and activity patterns in order to develop a personalized health and fitness program. Students will be required to participate in physical fitness activities and study the pertinent principles governing fitness.

Weight Training and Conditioning

Course Number:  PE613
Open to grades: ​ 10, 11, 12
Credit Hours: 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Physical Education and Health Education
Course Description:  This one-semester course provides instruction in proper weight training and conditioning. Instruction will be individualized to provide the greatest benefit to the individual. This course is strongly suggested for those interested in improving their athleticism.

Sports and Leadership - Zero Hour

Course Description:  This course is designed to use weight training to develop a positive physical and mental self. The emphasis of this course will be on weight training techniques, plyometric exercises, nutrition, flexibility, leadership development and sports-specific skills designed to improve the overall student-athlete.

Sports and Leadership II - Zero Hour

Credit Hours:  Credit Only (No Grade Assigned)
Prerequisite:  Department Approval
Course Description:  This course is designed to use weight training to develop a positive physical and mental self. The emphasis of this course will be on weight training techniques, plyometric exercises, nutrition, flexibility, leadership development and sports-specific skills designed to improve the overall student-athlete.  Students who have completed up to four semesters of Sports and Leadership I must register for Sports and Leadership II.
